Sur La Maison, Cherie!

I tortured myself mercilessly this weekend.

"Why?" you're probably asking. I asked myself the same thing. I did not get a decent answer.

"How?" you're probably wondering. Did she jab herself repeatedly with a skinny sewing needle? Did she pour hot liquid glue from the glue gun on her eyelids? Did she sit through an entire episode of Paris Hilton's "My New BFF" show?

No, no. Even I care about my sanity enough to avoid watching Paris Hilton anything.

I bought one of those home decor magazines. It gets worse. I read it, and then I spent two afternoons trying to make my home look like that. See? Merciless.

Why am I such a slave to those things? Why, I have stacks and stacks of home decor magazines dating back to 1923! Some styles are timeless! OK, they're from 2000, but still. Laptop thinks I've spent the equivalent of one college tuition on those. Probably right.

I do love my home but I'm always thinking of ways to make it better, which is probably a good thing. My style's evolved from the 'Romper Room' primary color scheme to the more sophisticated 'French Country' look. And that's where everything tends to break down.

Now I love the French but do you have any idea how picky they are? Do you know what perfectionists they can be? Do you know how much pride they take in their craftsmanship? Not any old doorknob or hinge from Lowe's is going to do. No siree! It must be a doorknob Marie Antoinette herself might have gone to trial and died for. Or a hinge Napoleon would've plunged the country into war over. That's the quality of artisan work found in the true French country home. I tried explaining this to Laptop as he stood there mouth agape asking "Where's our bedroom door?"

OK, I didn't actually remove the door but I did try explaining things. A puzzled look later, he just said "We'd better get to Lowe's before they close."

Oh well. I finally came to my senses. If I can't have that true French country look, I will most certainly enjoy true delicious French cuisine.

McDonald's French fries, here I come!

And many thanks for all of your kind words of support on that last minor speed bump with the writing. I guess every undertaking has its share, and this is no different. But speed bumps only slow us down. They're not stopping me and I hope that whatever speed bump you may be facing in your life doesn't stop you either!

so true and i am so glad you are past your writing block. i too have an addiction to home decor - im always painting and refinishing and sewing and rearrangeing. hubby thinks its a sickness and just shakes his head but my hobby has been hit seriously hard by the recession. of course, that only challanges me to find great bargains ... happy decorating... laissez les bonne temps roule!

I get those home decor magazines, but I never get around to actually doing any decorating changes. Money or time or laziness are probably what holds me back. Even decorating vicariously is fun:) Glad that you're still writing!

I'll pick up the home magazines occasionally. They're great for ideas, then going to lowe's or home depot or some such place and finding similar items. But just even browsing the magazines is comforting, stepping visually into some of those beautiful places!

I gave up on home style long ago..helps that I'm a minimalist at heart. I like this open and airy...Anyway, enough about me :D Thanks for helping with the votes!! I appreciate it! ...and keep on bumping along over those speed bumps. I feel like life is pretty much one after the other- or at least that's what it feels like most days..

I also get picky about the details. I got new cabinet knobs off the internet that were much pricier than Lowe's. Little things really add up!!

I have a stack of traditional home magazines from like 6 years ago. It is the one magazine that I horde.

Thank you for following my blog. I will stalk you too!!! Summer is coming and I have plenty of stalking time!!!

I am glad to see that I am in good company when it comes to my mission to achieve home decor greatness. It is a mission that I have been on for quite some time.

Tell me, though, do you find the having kids more than slightly impacts the pursuit of French Country perfection....because I sure do. :)

I had to laugh. i never buy those magazines. I give up hope just looking at the covers.

Hope you found what you needed at Lowe's but I have to say even a trip to that store is overwhelming for me.
